Executive Director's Report

Greetings from Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck!

We are in good shape at camp at this point in our preseason! We have just had the Timberland Store staff from two locations, Deer Park and Riverhead, out to the camp to help us! This came on the coattails of last month’s combined visit from the Port Jeff and Rocky Point Rotary Clubs for their Annual Spring Cleanup Day at the camp! We also had the Honors Club from Stony Brook University come out to the camp and get down and dirty spreading topsoil, mulching new areas created by the construction, and adding a fresh layer of sand to our playground.

These Timberland employees have helped us in the past and we are very grateful for their continued support in the form of volunteerism. Just as Rotary has a network where news can be communicated from club to club, so does the world of retail. As I spoke to the manager of the Timberland store, he informed me that his employees always love coming to the camp, as it fosters real teamwork in a non-competitive atmosphere, and the relationships among those employees have improved at their workplaces! Win-win!

If any of you movie buffs out there remember the movie “Field of Dreams” starring Kevin Costner, then you will remember the line that really resonated with me: “If you build it, they will come!” Well, I have adopted that motto in my everyday dealings with our volunteers. I always try to provide beverages and light food for the folks who volunteer here. I know that this can be a bit costly for the camp, but I feel that “If I feed them, they will come!” In the larger scheme of things, it seems a small price to pay for the work that people from all walks of life continue to give freely to the camp!

In recognizing the importance of volunteerism, and the huge impact that these individuals and groups have on our past, our present and our future, we thank you and salute you for your time and energy!

With gratitude,

Bridget Costello
